Effective sensory integration solutions for children at home

Question: My child is 2.5 years old and suspected of autism spectrum disorder. He is participating in an early intervention program. He lacks focus, has delayed language comprehension, and suffers from sensory issues. Is there any method to improve his behavior and sensory integration, expert?

Expert Simona Bossoni answers: Methods to reduce sensory processing disorders are often highly specialized. This roadmap depends entirely on each child’s specific manifestations. Therefore, it is best to let your child receive intervention from a qualified specialist.

Generally, we will expose the child to stimuli little by little. The process begins with a very short duration. We always apply the gentlest methods.

For example, if a child is afraid of loud noises, do not take them to crowded places right away. We will start by letting the child listen to soft sounds at home. Or the teacher and child will play a musical instrument together. Based on the child’s reactions, we will decide the next step.

Currently, Happy World Academy has a specialized sensory room. This space greatly supports the child’s sensory integration journey.

Strategies to reduce unwanted behaviors in children

Question: My child is 8 years old with a clinical diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. He is participating in an early intervention program. How can we reduce unwanted behaviors in the child?

Expert Simona Bossoni answers: The key to reducing unwanted behavior is understanding why it happens. There is always a specific trigger behind that behavior.

The cause could be sensory stimuli like a loud noise. It could also be a learning task that is too difficult for the child. Or it could simply be something happening inside the child’s body, such as a stomach ache.

Therefore, parents should keep a diary of when these behaviors occur. Observe what happened right before that. Once we understand the motivation, we can offer appropriate alternative behavior strategies. Combining early intervention and sensory integration at school will help improve the child’s behavior quickly.
